How Do I Look?

Whatever would we do without mirrors? Do you look in one and love what you see, or are there other times, not? Do you absolutely love everything God’s given you, or are there days or everyday when you wished you looked totally different?shutterstock_99042647

Isn’t it all about hair and make-up and the clothes you wear? And if not just yet, then maybe soon down the road? I mean, that’s what people first notice about you and what all the ads tell you, right?

Well, let me tell you, that’s not really so. And let’s just look at what God says about this, anyway.

1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.”

So what does that mean? . . . that you can’t have fun hair and cool outfits and look really great? That you even have to be quiet? Now that doesn’t sound fun. It actually sounds boring.

But wanna know what it really means? That is, that God wants you to look your best, and He’s not against fun hairstyles and fashion and even make-up. No way! And why do we know that? Because He’s a god of beauty and design. Just look at all He’s created . . . flowers, trees, snowfalls, sunsets . . . and because He’s so creative, He loves it when you are, too!

He enjoys when you love a new outfit or hairstyle or when you’re trying different make-up. He’s not against you having fun. He just wants you to know what’s most important . . . that is, that true beauty comes from within. And it’s when you radiate kindness and love towards others that you are most beautiful. It’s all what comes from your heart.

And about being quiet? God created you to be totally you . . . to express who you are, and to laugh, and yes, to have fun. He truly wants you to enjoy your life. He just doesn’t want you to do it in a loud arrogant way that draws attention to yourself. That’s all. He wants you to be other-centered and not self-centered and to not think more highly of yourself than somebody else. Now doesn’t that make total sense?

So if you ever start thinking it’s all about how you look . . . remember that true beauty comes from within and that nothing’s more beautiful than when you’re glowing with God.

  1. Sometimes I just think that I am so ugly and I wonder how my parents could call me pretty, but things like this comfort me.

  2. Thank you both for sharing, and I’m glad this post was comforting to you. I felt the same way growing up, but it was learning God’s truth that so much comforted me. I learned that He created us to be who we truly are which makes us unique and special and beautiful, and it was fun to discover who I truly was and what I liked . . . the style of my clothes and my hair, and yes, Maddie . . . nothing felt better than being me! But learning that nothing makes you more beautiful than having His light shine through you made me feel especially beautiful :- ) So walk with confidence knowing that!
